Teacher Guidelines

Our complete teacher guidelines are available online to download at the bottom of the page.  Our teachers are parents or professionals from the community who are paid for their services. Teaching is a wonderful opportunity, but it is also a great responsibility. This community of home educating families, has expressed a desire for classes which are well organized, fun, and has a high standard educational content. Teachers do not necessarily need to be state certified, but should have a passion for teaching and an experience with the subject matter.

 

To teach a class at ELCC you need to:

 

  1. Attend a teacher’s meeting where the guidelines in this booklet are reviewed, sign and turn in the last page.

  2. Submit a teacher application with two references and a signed copy of our Statement of Faith.  This can be found on our website at http://www.excellenceinlearning.org/teacher-information/teacher-application

  3. Submit a description of a class you would like to teach including:  Class name, age range for class, number of students for class, textbook to be used including ISBN, topics to be covered, is the class graded, the cost of the class, is this a semester of year long class, any supplies needed to participate, any other relevant information.

  4. We will meet with you to review your class offering and any questions or concerns.  Teachers must be able to both teach and manage their own children at co-op.

  5. Submit to and pass a background check performed by the Pathways of Licking County. You will need to have the BCI and FBI check – the cost is $65.  Take a photo ID with you. 

  6. Once we have received a clear background check, we publish your class offering in the ELCC handbook and online

     

    Teachers have a written lesson plan for each class they are teaching, these area available to parents upon request.

     

    Lesson Plans: 

  • One page, easy to copy. 

  • Worksheets/Lab sheets attached

  • Includes list of supplies used in class

  • Includes links to online resources used in class

  • Outlines what will be taught and homework for the week (if no homework, there should be advice for supplemental information parents can use)

  • Some prefer a written homework assignment – a copy of the lesson plan would suffice

  • Parents may include this in their portfolio review

     

    Teacher Safety:

     

    Teachers will arrive in/at your classroom about 5 minutes before class starts.

    Wear a badge, check for a walkie talkie, and have a helper.

     

    Classroom attendance is taken each class on the classroom attendance sheet (example attached to the booklet)

  • Teachers sign and turn in your sheet to the desk each week

  • The dedicated class helper can take attendance

     

Teachers and the dedicated helper will radio the safety monitor if:

A student is missing from class or leaves without permission

A student is so disruptive they are preventing teaching (ask that their parents come and get them)

A student is harming other students, or threatening to harm other students or parents (ask for a safety monitor to come and help you)

 
 

Correction in the Classroom

It is sometimes necessary to lovingly correct behavior in the classroom; if such occasion arises the following method will be used.  Please keep notes on your interactions with students if they accumulate 3 strikes and/or must be removed from class. This will greatly help when talking with parents or leadership.

  • Strike one – student will be reminded of their behavior and given a verbal warning.  The goal is for the student to recognize their offence.

  • Strike two – student will again be reminded of their behavior and will be asked to stay after class to speak with the teacher.  Teachers will use this time to explain the infraction and why this is not appropriate in a loving and firm manner.  The goal is for the student to understand their offence, and to correct their behavior.

  • Strike three – student will again be reminded of their behavior and will be asked to stay after class to speak with the teacher and they will need to stay after the co-op to speak with the teacher and their parent.  The goal is for the student to understand and correct their behavior and for the teacher and parents to work together towards a resolution. 

  • “Strikes” do not accumulate from day to day or class to class – they reset each day and each class to zero.

  • Students in High school or middle school who are completely unprepared for class (they have no supplies/assignments and can’t share) can be asked to return to their parents.  

Our directors are here to help with behavior planning, one on one meeting with parents and students, conflict resolution and more!  Please do not be afraid to involve a director if needed.

After a child has been escorted from class on two separate occasions, a parent will need to accompany their child to class to ensure that disruptions do not continue.  If the parent can not accompany the child, and the child must be escorted to their parent for a third time, the child will not be permitted to return to class. 

If a parent is in class with the student, and the student continues to be disruptive, the student may be asked to leave the class and not permitted to return. 

  

Taxes and Employment

We contract with teachers (aka parents) to provide needed and desired services to our members. What this means:

  • We do not offer paid positions within co-op, all teachers are independent contractors. 

  • If a teacher/helper will receive more than $300.00 in a semester, before funds can be released, they will need to supply ELCC with a valid Tax ID number and a current W-9 form

  • We are required to report your income from co-op to the IRS if it is $600 or more– and we will provide you with a 1099.

  • We do not withhold taxes from your income.

  • We can not deduct class fees for your children from your income, these must be paid separately.

  • Teachers receiving $300 or more per semester will be paid in 3 equal checks. One on the 5th week of the semester, one on the 9th week and one on the 13th week.
